Travel Health Insurance AKA Digital Nomad Health Insurance

Traveling

As a digital nomad, having reliable health insurance is crucial. Traveling from country to country comes with uncertainties—what if I get sick? What if I need emergency medical care? Finding an insurance plan that provides comprehensive coverage without breaking the bank can be a challenge. I want to share my experience using Genki! Also, I trust them so much compared to any other providers I researched, that I've partnered with them and receive commissions if you sign up - just so you're aware. I also encourage you to let me know if you can possibly find a better option/alternative out there!

Why I Chose Genki

When searching for the right plan, I looked for something that offered:

  • Global Coverage – I needed insurance that would cover me no matter where I traveled.
  • Emergency and Routine Care – Some plans only cover emergencies, but I wanted something that also included doctor visits.
  • Affordable Pricing – Cost was a major factor, for obvious reasons. This is BudgetBrady after all.
  • United States Coverage – I “traveled” for 2 years continuously so to speak but there were visits home to the USA to see family and attend weddings so I had to be covered in the USA.
  • Replaced Health Insurance – I was able to use my policy to completely cover me and not have to have any sort of health insurance in the US. For Californians, or folks who have to file income taxes in California, this may not fulfill State Coverage minimum for Tax liability purposes, at least not at the time I used it.

My Experience Using Genki

Genki was super easy to sign up for, payments were low and never changed in price, and my claims were resolved relatively quickly. A few great things about my policy, Genki World Explorer, there were no limits or caps on how much I could incur for expenses. So if my hospitalization cost $1 million they would’ve covered it. It was also great that I could go to any doctor or facility and get care and get reimbursed. When I did have to use it, I paid just $50 net out of pocket, as a sort of deductible for my treatment. I walked into a hospital in Japan (after trying to go to clinics and straight up confusing Japanese people) and received care. I met with a doctor, had a CT scan, sonogram, bloodwork, urinalysis, met with another doctor, got a prescription filled and walked out paying just $50. Took pictures of receipts and uploaded them to Genki and that was it! Super easy and surely paid for itself off of just one mishap in the two years of traveling. Something like that in the US would be scary expensive with or without health insurance. And Genki still covered me for emergencies, that incident would’ve counted, while in the US visiting for 6 weeks or less.

Pros and Cons of Genki Digital Nomad Insurance

Pros:

✔️ Straightforward Enrollment – Signing up was quick and easy, with clear pricing and coverage details. ✔️ Comprehensive Coverage – Covers medical emergencies, hospital stays, and even preventive care in some cases. ✔️ Worldwide Acceptance – Works in multiple countries without needing to switch plans. ✔️ No Long-Term Contracts – Flexible month-to-month options for digital nomads.

Cons:

Out-of-Pocket Payments Required – In some cases, you may need to pay upfront and file for reimbursement. ❌ Strict USA coverage – Coverage was limited to emergencies only and also had a strict time limit for how long you could be in the USA. This limit applies to both US Residents and Citizens as well as tourists and visitors. Sometimes even being more strict for visitors.

Is Genki the Right Choice for Digital Nomads?

Overall, Genki Digital Nomad Health Insurance provides solid coverage for frequent travelers who need flexible and affordable health insurance. It’s a great option if you want peace of mind while moving between countries. However, it’s always best to review your specific needs and compare policies before making a decision.

Budget Brady

My name is Brady and I have been obsessed with Personal Finance and money management since I was very very young (probably way too early). I grew up the youngest in a big, frugal family in the Midwest. I've been fortunate to have parents and grandparents that were smart with their money. My dad added me as an authorized user to one of his credit cards before I was even a teenager enabling me to have a solid credit history by the time I was even close to becoming an adult. I now research and share my findings here to help my friends thrive too!
